Osteoporosis and Strength Training

Writer: Rachel ForteRachel Forte

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by weakened bones, increasing the risk of fractures. Strength training has become a widely recognized and effective way to manage osteoporosis and improve bone health.

How Strength Training Helps with Osteoporosis:

  • Increases Bone Density: Weight-bearing exercises like strength training stimulate bone formation and help maintain or even increase bone density, reducing the risk of fractures.

  • Improves Muscle Strength: Stronger muscles support the bones, reducing strain on them and preventing falls, which are a common cause of fractures in individuals with osteoporosis.

  • Enhances Posture and Balance: Strengthening the muscles that support the spine can help improve posture and balance, both of which are important for preventing falls.

Evidence Supporting Strength Training for Osteoporosis:

  • A 2015 study in Osteoporosis International found that strength training increased bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, helping to slow the progression of osteoporosis.

  • The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) recommends strength training as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for osteoporosis, stating that it is an effective strategy for improving bone strength and reducing fracture risk.

Strength training is a powerful tool for managing osteoporosis, supporting bone health, and maintaining independence.
